You’re probably wondering why I was scrambling for a plane ticket to Boston. You’re probably wondering what this top-secret gig of excellence is. Allow me to explain.
On Wednesday I was contacted by the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard University for a really super opportunity to perform at a unique event. The organizers were cautious to commit to any details immediately because they’ve been planning this event very carefully for months, and my potential inclusion was something very last-minute and had to get the OK from all the different organizing bodies involved. As such, I had to be sort of vague about it in the event that I was excluded.
I got another email from the HCH this morning, and now I can tell you what I’ve been waiting to tell you since Wednesday:
Stephen Fry is being honored by the Harvard Secular Society this Tuesday, and I’m completely ecstatic out of my skull to report that I have been invited to perform my song to him in the course of the event.
OMIGODOMIGOD OMIGOD OMIGOD
The event is sold out, unfortunately. However, I’m told that some of it will be filmed and posted online, so I will make a big ruckus when that happens.
I posted the song to my YouTube channel about a week ago, and now these wheels are in motion. The internet is a strange and wonderful place.
tl;dr:
GUYS I’M FLYING TO HARVARD

“ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE TRIP TO BOSTON STEPTO PEED IN STEPHEN FRY’S HAT”
That’s because you are awesome, everyone knows that! Even Stephen fry!

OMG! This is so awesome! And well deserved!
I’m happy the fundraiser was a success.
If somebody wrote a story like this, nobody would believe a word of it. I’m thrilled for you, Molly, and even more that the doodle I commissioned will help make it happen.
Imagine how I feel. I’m struggling with how to explain two days of absence to my professors.
Dude…
Like, duuuuuuuuuuude.
… yeah, I’m speechless.
What if he takes you up on you offer? He very well may, if Kingdom is any indication.
That’s what I was thinking… he could save on seed-postage. ;|
Holy shinola, Batman!
This will keep me pleased about being alive in this world for some time yet. Get down witcher bad self, Molly!
-Yet another fan
Holy effing shazbot!!!!!!!
DUUUUDE!!! That’s exceptionally cool! XD
Sadly, I failed to get tickets this year, but I went a couple of years ago when they gave it to Joss Whedon and it was a blast. You will have a grand time. I look forward to seeing the video afterward.
Welcome to Boston!
Conga-Rats for you milady! Melt his face with your soothing ballads!
<3
Sometimes, just sometimes, the world turns out to be what we hope rather than what we fear.
People rally round to help each other out though simple courtesy, respect and generosity of spirit, without needing some dusty book or shouty old man telling us what to do. Sharing makes us all richer, and goodwill isn’t limited by artificial scarcity.
Truly, I love you, Ms Molly, in the most non-creepy, non-stalkerish, non-possessive sense. I love what you do and what you show to be possible, and I love all the other people who love you, because our group love embiggens and emboldens us all. But, not like in a cult. Just in the regular-folks way.
tl;dr version:
Awesome story is awesome.
That’s freakin awesome, congrats. Have fun!
Simultaneously the most amazing and most devastating news ever. If only it weren’t sold out. D:
Congrads.
I had the inkling of a hope that this would in fact be the case. Look forward to seeing you there, as well as the man himself.
Wow, I’m so happy for you (and Stephen Fry is lucky to be having you there and should let you have his baby). Can I please change my request to a cover of the entire event?
When you said this would be the highlight of the year, I thought of the cruise and figured you were over-hyping it, but Holy Crap! CONGRATS! Enjoy your trip. It’s great to see good things happen to talented people!
Molly, I’d be falling apart if it were me…you’re going to be great! Enjoy!
Yay! I’ll be seeing SF a few days later in DC, at the Washington Shakespeare Company’s production of some selections in Klingon. He’s there with the BBC. Please tell us that this is going to be taped and put up on YouTube!! I so wish I could be there!
OMIGOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m so happy for you!!!
..I suddenly see you singing to him in his lap.
“Happy BURRRthday, Mister PuhRESident…”
You’re singing your song to Steven Fry, a self proclaimed atheist, at the Harvad Secular Society, and the first words out of your mouth is “Omigod, Omigod, Omigod, Omigod!”?
Are you sure you’re up to the task?
Actually, I would think that saying ‘Omigod’ with abandon would be a mark of atheism, since those who believe in God would be wary of taking the Lord’s name in vain. Besides, ‘Oh your God’ doesn’t have the same ring to it.
The irony is not lost on me.
Stephen Fry himself is know to have said “O.M.F.G.” on occasions.
On the subject of inadvertent religious references related to Stephen Fry, the vowel sounds in Stephen Fry’s name are the same as those in Jesus Christ’s, so if I have the song in my head and I’m not paying much attention to getting the lyrics right, I often find my brain is singing ‘Jesus Christ’ in place of ‘Stephen Fry’. But then, my brain also sings ‘I like to buy flowers’ instead of ‘I like to take showers’ in Coulton’s ‘Over There’, so maybe it’s just weird.
It doesn’t really make sense to offer to have Jesus Christ’s baby, but I can sort of imagine this kind of offer being how Mary got into that whole mess.
Wow. Just … wow.
Re: “Ohmigod”, I’m pretty sure that’s street slang for “Oh, Mi-Go‘d”, i.e. when one feels like one’s brain has been put in a jar by intelligent alien fungi and transported across time and space to a bizarre dream-world.
I am so excited for you! Bring your woolies, it’s supposed to snow again. And while you’re in the Square, if you’re chocolate-ly inclined, I recommend the hot chocolate at Burdicks on Brattle Street. It isn’t as great as singing to Stephen Fry, but it’s pretty darn good.
In conclusion, FREE MOLLY!
I can’t express how ASTOUNDINGLY HAPPY I am for you
))) Go Team Molly!!
I do hope if he does reject your sexual advances after that, he does so gently
This is amazingly awesome! Congratulations!
On behalf of all of us who love Stephen Fry, this is amazing! Congratulations – I know you’ll be fantastic!!
Fuck yeah !
WOWOHWOW! This is the best news of the year. CONGRATULATIONS! I used to call myself your biggest fan…now I know that Stephen Fry will be.
I feel strangely super proud of you, Molly. Your mother must be bubbling with pride as well. Have fun and know we are all so excited for you!!!
She’s dubba-bubbling.
I hope you are ovulating.
I hope she’s not. Really.
Tongue in cheek. Not bun in the oven, please.
Molly…I think I just got even more damn excited for you after reading this post! Additional: allow me to arrange a baby shower for you and little Stephen/Stephanie Jr. I promise to make hilarious Stephen Fry themed baby shower games. Additional-additional: Please make sure to update your wikipedia account with this info when necessary. THIS. IS. HUUUUGGGE! Oh, and hang your iPad in the crib.
Hi Molly, will you be taking a turkey baster just in case?
This is amazing. If I *happen* to be hanging around Harvard tomorrow might I get to see you? Or that amazing man? Either one will do.
But really, congratulations, you deserve it! You’re a big inspiration for me– I run a radio show at BU about youtube musicians and you’re at the top of my list. Keep up the great work and things like this show how your work pays off! And I’ll keep playing your songs, too!

Congratulation Molly, that was epic.
Oh hey, that’s the video I took. Thanks for posting it here, good idea!
It really was a wonderful performance! You never saw two people enjoy a song so much as Molly and Stephen enjoyed this one.
Thank you so much for the video. It’s great that you shared this with us !
@Sebastien, thanks for posting the video.
@Molly, I’ve read several reviews and summaries of the event. You have been consistently mentioned as a highlight. Bravo!
This is one of the nicest stories the internet has ever told. Really. The next chapter now *has* to be “The Pregnancy Of Molly”
And then Small Fry will be known as ‘Child of the Internet’ and will save us all in the third story of the trilogy.
@Molly FTW! It was so nice to see him enjoy that so much!!
The awesome is battling the awkward here really hard. Beautifully done, Molly!

More awesome irony here St. John’s Eagle, Memorial Chapel, Psalters, Hymns, and a Humanist Chaplaincy (plus the journey to the Blessed Event):
Sorry I’m late,

Mr. and Mrs. Lewis, you have raised a lovely person.

Ah, WordPress, another try.
I give up. It’s ugly but it works.
Excitement, and mild infatuation! ( the exclamation is for the excitement not the… yeah you get it.)
I’m sure you’ve noticed by now, but your song is now featured on Pharyngula (as “the most flattering song ever written”).
Thought I’d A) let you know, on the off chance you had not seen, and B) add my sheer gob-smacked adoration for your song. Beautifully done!
Ha, Cuttlefish, I came over to let her know PZ featured her video too. What geeklet wouldn’t love knowing that?
This is totally amazing. I am both happy for you and jealous of you. I have been following your music since waaayyy back when you did Tom Cruise Crazy on the uke. So, when I opened up my favorite blog, Pharyngula, and started playing the posted video I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw you. I was simply giddy. Congrats!!!
Molly, Did you get enough to cover your flight? Harvard really should have paid for your flight… don’t you think? You were a sensation! Made me smile, made me laugh. Congratulations! You must tell us all about it! He seemed to know what was coming, did you meet with him beforehand… get to talk with him after?
I got to meet him a few days after, in DC, and I asked him about it. He said that she was witty, warm and extremely nice. It sounded to me like he did have the opportunity to talk with her a bit, and that she made a very good impression on him. I told him about Tony Vila’s comment above, which he agreed was a perfect way to summarize the experience (awesome vs. awkward).
[newbie's 2nd blog reply attempt]
Hiya Miss Molly -
Just wondering, after favoriting all 4 of the best recordings of the big event back east with SF, why you’ve gone mute about the experience?
Disappointment, too busy at school, or relief, whatevs, but says here your fans ache for an blog update.
Or not, it’s entirely your call, of course.

SO! It’s post “GIG” and while I am sure that right about now you are receiving invitations from the Queen, etcetera, etcetera and so on…. We wanted to say, great song-congrats-and awesome performance in front of THE MAN! We found you through a link and are now confirmed fans.
When where and how can we lowly mere mortals hope to see you perform in the greater Seattle-Tacoma area?
You were absolutely amazing <3
I would have your babies were it physically possible.
Thank you! Now, in addition to being a Stephen Fry fan, I am your fan.
aXBcI2 That’s really thinking out of the box. Thanks!
How’d it go? Now I’m so curious!
Molly, you’re awesome, and this is still the best thing on the internet.
To anybody who hasn’t watched the whole event, Stephen Fry was awesome too.
mmmm, I didn’t know that it would embed the video in my comment. Not what I wanted!
Okay… I am late to the party (“real” life and such… most of all work)… But WOW!!!
Love Stephen’s reaction too!
Actually, Frodo, you’re not all that late. Heck, even the darling young lady hasn’t filed follow up remarks quite yet. (tick-tock, tick-tock).
Cupjay
Wow! That’s a great honor. congratulations
Please blog about Stephen Fry at Harvard! Its been months! Come on already!
Obviously the young lady has walked away from this topic, (guessing) probably embarrassed about stuff we can’t imagine.
Gotta let it go, I guess.
PS: Y’all probably wanna subscribe to her “molly23″ twitter feed for *much* more recent doings:
