DON’T PANIC.

As some of you have already reminded me, I have been accepted into this round of Quick Stop Entertainment’s Masters Of Song Fu (third from the bottom, beeyotch).

This week’s challenge is to write a happy song.
I don’t see how I could muster that, as I am SO FREAKED OUT.

Don’t mind me, I’ll just be drowning my sorrows in this here Tree Top.

  1. The competition is just as scared of you as you are of it.

I don’t understand how Mike can do that…
I just pondered on a basic idea and strummed a banjo for a few minutes. I probably won’t finish until the day before it’s due.

  2. I never said it was GOOD. My tuition dollars hard at work. To be perfectly honest, guess what my “Advanced Songwriting” class assignment was this week: Write a happy song. No, really. So yea it needs some tweaking but it’s getting there. It is still a wee 24 hours or so old.

Also I was going to subscribe to you on YT but I realized you already had enough subscribers to create a small army and take over the world. So I went with twitter instead.

  3. well, I guess you could write a sad song, then change all minor chords to major chords and speed it up.

I am sure that would work!

    I am pretty sure.

    No, really.

  4. Molly, I believe in you. I may have even suggested that you enter the Song Fu competition months ago. I’ve even written songs about you. OK, the song wasn’t ABOUT YOU, but you did get a mention, more like a musical shout out!

Now, I’m competing against you! And Hank Green, Paul and Storm and Neil FREAKIN’ Innes! Holy Crap!

You have legions of fans, Molly, who will surely vote you through to round two. I will just try to write a good song and pray that somebody notices.

    Good Luck. Molly!

  5. Don’t panic. You can do it.
Anyways, don’t write a song to win, to have written the better song than anyone else. Write a song that you like, with no regard for whether you’ll win. Then you’ll probably win. Or something.
What kind of “happy” are we talking here? Like, is it HAPPY happy, like “I am in love with people and grass is green YES” kind of happy, or can you be ironic, Randy Newman kind of happy?

  6. Ironic is easy. Happy is hard.

I think we are talking, “Gliddy glub gloopy nibby nabby noopy,” 59th Street Bridge, Turtles Reunion Tour, Partridge Family Marathon, Bobby McFerrin singing Bob Marley, “Don’t Worry About a Thing Be Happy” kind of happy.

OK, now I’m starting to freak out a bit too!

  7. First, DON’T PANIC.

You seem to have awareness of that. Stop worrying about how original it is, or who you’ve ripped off or what anyone else might be doing.

Happy doesn’t necessarily mean honest. An unreliable narrator, or even better, a delusional one can tell one helluva upbeat story. And you kinda strike me as a storyteller of a sort.

    Second, write what you know.

Third, it was said above, write something for yourself, everything else will follow.

  8. “You have legions of fans, Molly, who will surely vote you through to round two.”

Yes, indeed. While we as fans might, by all outward appearances, seem to like you as a person, we certainly offer you no mercy. Count up all the bottles of apple juice you’ve gone through at the end of the week, and imagine doubling that when we, chanting your name and cheering you on, vote you through to write a *second* song.

  9. you get nerdier everyday.
i know that you understand that as a compliment. go! write!
Possible topics include: kitten cam, friends who think you want to dance, the joys of being broke- this one has significance and topical timeliness due to the economic shitstorm we are in, youtube, flat screen tvs, your new wii.
oh wait: it is way past next tuesday. where is the damn song?!!!

  10. You should write a song about Peter Fernandez, that guy who puts all of those personal ads in your local newspaper. That guy knows some HAPPY

  11. the sun is finally shining,
    through the darkest days
    and I’m feeling so good
    In my own special way

    I have taken interest
    to your point of view
    It’s your uplifting outtake
    that shows right through

New world for us to be,so much makes me happy
New song for us to sing, just be so content
New chance for us to love, but it comes with change
New time for us to give, day by day

hehe dumb right I tried to write a happy song off the top of my head good luck with the contest I hope you win

  12. Hey! unrelated comment! the title of this post reminds me of a song you could cover… oddly enough called Don’t Panic, by Coldplay, it’s on Parachutes and the Garden State OST, you’d even get to show off your plucking :-D anywho, I hope you’re chuggin along with that song and the bf is good. I think the Tom Leher (sp?)/TMBG angle would be good, happy song, depressing lyrics.

  13. Glad to see you’re getting into the Song-Fu thing. Your nervousness is understandable, but I’m sure you’ll do great.

Also, just wanted to say the “Operation” t-shirt is hilarious. I have to look for one now.
